Dear Readers,

I’I’m beyond excited (and a bit misty-eyed) to introduce you to Not Just Words: Writing as Liberation. This book isn’t just about writing—it’s about finding your voice, reclaiming your power, and stepping boldly into the writer you’ve always been. If you’re here, you’ve already taken the first brave step from “I want to write” to “I’m doing it.”

I wrote this book with you in mind: the dreamer, the doer, the one who feels a story pulsing inside. Maybe you’ve started and stopped so many times you’ve lost count. Maybe you’ve got an idea that’s been locked away, waiting for the right moment. Or maybe you just need a friendly push to take you across the finish line. Wherever you are, please know—you’re not alone.

Writing is an act of courage. It’s a way to honor who you are and share that unique spark with the world. In these pages, I’ll walk you through my own path as a writer, revealing how to conquer procrastination and those nagging fears that try to silence us. Most of all, I want to help you discover (or rediscover) the spark that sets your words on fire.

My greatest wish is that Not Just Words will inspire you to go deeper, keep going, and see your writing through to the end. But beyond finishing a book, I hope it shows you how writing can transform and liberate you from within.

So here’s to you—the brave, the bold, the visionary ready to shine. Thank you for letting me be part of your journey. I can’t wait to see what you create.

With gratitude and belief in your brilliance,

Nicole Y.

  • The neglect and omission of Black literature and voices is more than an oversight; it’s a profound disservice that threatens the intricate mosaic of Black history, culture, and lived experiences. Such acts do more than sideline Black narratives; they jeopardize the rich wisdom, connections, and inspiration these voices provide for future generations.

Yet the danger is far more profound than merely removing books from shelves or whitewashing our history. While these are undeniably grievous offenses – and to be clear, very unconscionable – what strikes deeper at the heart is the historical erasure unfolding yet again before our eyes. The deliberate fading of our stories mirrors a systematic attempt to diminish our very existence. Societies are etched in memory by the marks they leave behind.
